Audience theory 2: notes

Theory questions and your opinion 1) Social learning theory has been criticised for simplifying the causes of violence in society. Do you think the media is responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence? I think the media should be held responsible to a certain extent as there are many things that the media has produced. For example, many young children and teenagers are impressionable and the media has many inappropriate things they can mimick.    2) How is social learning theory relevant in the digital age? Are young people now learning behaviour from social media and the internet? Give examples. This is because, especially at a young age many children and teenagers are impressionable and this can have both a negative and positive impact. For example, a dress up game that may seem innocent and appropriate for kids can cause a severely negative impact. This is due to the fact that children are still growing and games that are pushing out a certain idea of how you should look and

Audience theory 1: blog tasks

Playing violent video games for just 20 minutes a day can encourage aggressive behaviour: How does this article link to the hypodermic needle model? The hypodermic needle is a crude theory from the 1920s that suggests the media injects information into the audience like a hypodermic needle and therefore can have a dangerous effect on us and this article is also displaying how video games can have a negative effect on people even though it may seem innocent. The post reveals how playing a violent video game for as short as 20 minutes can trigger something in someone which makes them mimick what they have seen in this game. However, playing a non-violent video game, such as a racing game, has no effect on aggression when played for 20 minutes a day for three consecutive days. 2) How does coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case (see Daily Mail front page below) link to the hypodermic needle model? Why might someone  criticise  this front page?  This case is a displayed as a clear example

Genre Blog tasks

1) What example is provided of why visual iconographies are so important? Both Star Wars and Star Trek use recognisable iconographies of  Science Fiction (see below) but they do not use them the same way.  Star Trek tends to use a more futuristic setting which relates to an idealised (utopian) world of the future. The Star Wars universe is far less ideal and is portrayed in some parts as more rough and ready', however, they both share enough characteristics to be   considered within the same genre. 2) What examples are provided of the importance of narrative in identifying genre? The plot in these two genres my be very similar, but the narratives of soap operas and sit-coms are very different. Both use different narrative codes: sit coms tend to be episodic narratives whilst the soap opera convention is to use an open ended. multi-strand narrative structure 3) What is the difference between character representation in action movies and disaster movies? W here the action hero i
